Crowns and Bridges

Most of us reach a point in our lives where we will need a tooth repaired and sometimes even replaced.

If you have a tooth that is fractured, decayed, or damaged beyond what a dental filling can repair, Dr. Call may recommend a dental crown to restore your tooth. A dental bridge is an option that can replace a missing tooth and restore your smile.

Today’s crowns and bridges are made of ceramic porcelain and customized to match your teeth so they blend flawlessly with your smile. Here’s what you should know if you need a crown or a bridge.

What Happens if I Don’t Get a Crown?

If you’ve been told that you need a crown, it’s likely your tooth is in one of these situations:

  • Deeply fractured, cracked, or broken
  • Needs to be strengthened after root canal therapy
  • Deeply decayed
  • Needs a restoration for a dental implant
  • Has an old filling or crown that is damaged, broken, or lost
  • If you don’t repair a decayed or fractured tooth, you are putting your other teeth at risk as they will have to compensate for the damaged tooth.

Tooth decay can also cause discomfort, especially when it reaches the root of your tooth. It’s important to repair a decayed tooth in order to prevent the damage from progressing and causing bigger problems.

Fixed in a Day: Same-Day Crowns

A damaged tooth can affect not only your oral health, but also how you feel about your appearance. Instead of hiding your smile due to a damaged tooth, you can fix it fast. That’s why RGC Dentistry offers dental crowns that you can get in a single visit to our dental office! Read on for more info about same-day crowns and why they're so popular.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A crown is a cap that goes over a damaged tooth. Crowns are made from porcelain, resin, ceramics, and metals. Crowns are used to protect, cover, and restore the shape of your teeth when fillings don’t solve the problem.

Your dentist will determine the best material to use for your crown. Crowns require the same care you would give your natural teeth, good oral hygiene! Best of all, you can get an exam, consultation, and a crown all on the same day.

What Are Same-Day Crowns?

As the name implies, a same-day crown is one that is designed and fitted the same day. Dentists use an intraoral camera as well as computer-aided technology to create a 3D image of your damaged tooth which acts as a digital mold. They will then use a CEREC machine to make your ceramic crown based on the digital mold.

The CEREC machine is an advanced technology that is used to get impeccable results for patients. Instead of multiple visits to the dentist and a temporary crown that is necessary with traditional crowns, CEREC makes it possible to get a durable, natural-looking crown in just one dental office visit.

Pros and Cons of Same-Day Crowns

As with anything, there are pros and cons. Although there are more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to same-day crowns, it’s important to have all the facts to make an informed decision.

Pros

  • Further injury is prevented when a crown is placed on a damaged tooth the same day.
  • Patients have full use and function of their teeth immediately after the procedure.
  • Having fewer dentist visits saves money.
  • CEREC crowns fit perfectly and match your natural tooth.
  • CEREC crowns are precise and not painful.
  • Same-day crowns prevent damaged teeth from decaying.

Cons

  • If you need a metal-based crown or a gold crown, the machine cannot make those types of crowns.
  • Technology can’t tell if there is damage below the gums.

Who Is the Best Candidate for Same-Day Crowns?

Although we all want speedy results, some patients are a better match for traditional crowns. You may be better off with a traditional crown if you have:

  • Cosmetic demands
  • Issues grinding your teeth
  • Excessive wear
  • Damage below the gum line

If you’re hiding your smile because of a bad tooth or because you don’t think you have time to take care of getting a crown, same-day crowns are an option that’s worth considering. Our experienced staff will help you get a great result while saving time and money! Best of all, the entire process takes place in one day.
